Synopsis:

What if every Star Trek: The Original Series episode was a movie event? What would the movie poster look like? This was the inspiration to develop a one-of-a-kind set of images for the series that launched a franchise. Artist Juan Ortiz has created unique retro-style art with the look of a 60s movie poster, comic book, pulp novel cover or advertisement, one each for all 80 episodes.

I couldn’t turn down an opportunity to check out a Star Trek art book, and I don’t really have anything to compare it to, but Star Trek: The Art of Juan Ortiz is really exceptional. While only being 112 pages, it’s 14.4″ x 10.3″ in its dimensions which is really great. It give extra pop to the posters which are done in a movie release style for each episode. The art is this really blocky, minimalist 1960’s retro and I love it desperately.

I’m not always lucky enough to have art work provided for a review but in this case I am. Here are three of the episodic movie posters for you to click and enjoy. It gives you a great tastes for the theme of the art, and why I’m tempted to buy another book so that I can hack it to pieces a frame each episode individually.

Star Trek: The Art of Juan Ortiz starts with a great little biography of the artist and author, Juan Ortiz and his volley from Disney to Warner Bros. and what brought him to devote a day to creating each poster. When I flipped through the posted I found it virtually impossible to choose a favorite. Usually I can choose a few, but I’m such a fan of this style of art, that I’d rather not choose and simply wallpaper my house with them.

In the back of the book you can find a smaller version of the posters with a quote from episode and a note from Juan Ortiz on the inspiration for each episode.

If you are a fan of any of the Star Trek incarnations then you have to be able to dish out some respect to the original series and this book does that in the most amazing way.

I give Star Trek: The Art of Juan Ortiz Five Out of Five Stars.
