Marvel’s original Human Torch Jim Hammond is to make a return in a new series produced by Dynamite Entertainment, it has been reported.
Introduced decades before the Fantastic Four hero of the same name, Hammond is an android first seen battling against the Third Reich in comic books during the 1940s. The character later sacrificed himself to foil the plans of Neo Nazis several years ago.
The living inferno will make his return in an eight-issue mini-series titled The Torch, written by Mike Carey and Alex Ross, with artwork from Patrick Berkenkotter.
“Most superheroes, when they put on a costume, are putting on a disguise. They become someone else, their real self being their civilian self,”
“But there are another group of characters, that would include people like the Martian Manhunter and the Torch, who create their civilian identity to hide their true nature.”
The writer also explained that the character’s most compelling aspect is his lack of human experience.
“He has to learn those things as he goes along. He adopted the name Jim Hammond very early on but I think it takes an awful long time before he becomes Jim Hammond; a person with a genuine human identity and perspective,” he added.
The Torch #1 will arrive in comic stores in September.
