Yesterday Geoff Johns (Green Lantern: Rebirth, Blackest Night) announced on his Twitter account that he would be starting work on a new Aquaman series to hit shelves later this fall.
DC’s king of the Atlantis made his debut in 1941, making him one of the oldest superheroes in the DC Comics canon. In spite of his iconic status, Aquaman has had a rougher time at surviving in a solo title than some of his peers. Since his creation, he has been the focus of 6 different titles, the longest running only 75 issues, and several revamps which took the character in different directions.
[The Shakedown]
This is excellent news. In an effort to make the the character’s titles stick, writers have tried to take the character in so many different directions he’s become a confused mess. It’s a sad thing too, because Aquaman is one of the more interesting characters in the DCU. I always find it interesting to watch him struggle with his responsibilities as the king of a nation that only accepts him when things are good. If anyone can breathe new life into the character and get a title to take off it’s Johns. Here’s hoping we get to issue #100! :)
