Famke Janssen (Down the Shore, X-Men) and Peter Stormare (Lockout, Prison Break) recently signed on to play the leader of the witches, and the villainous town Sheriff, opposite Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker, The Avengers) and Gemma Arterton (Wrath of the Titans) as Hansel and Gretel in director Tommy Wirkola‘s (Dead Snow) Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters.
We’ve known that the film picks up the fairy-tale siblings 15 years after their traumatic gingerbread house incident, which provoked them to become witch hunters. Now, Clint over at moviehole got some spoilery details on what goes down in this re-invisioning of the classic Brothers Grimm fairy tale. Check out some of the details below!
[Spoiler Alert]
- Hansel and Gretel have grown up and become famous for hunting down and killing witches in the years since their infamous incident at the gingerbread house. The two were permanently scarred by the event, Gretel suffers nightmares from the ordeal and Hansel is now diabetic from being forced to eat all the candy when he was a kid.
- The town of Augsburg has a witch problem. Numerous kids have gone missing and the power-mad Sheriff Berringer (Stormare) has been burning potentially innocent suspects at the stake left and right. The town’s mayor then recruits the siblings to help out.
- After arriving in Augsberg, Hansel and Gretel find they have their work cut out for them. It seems that the rise of the “Blood Moon” marks a holy night for witches, and the siblings have 48 hours before the deadly and sexy ring-leader of the witches, Muriel uses the holy night to sacrifice multiple children.
Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters is slated to hit theaters on March 3rd, 2012.
