Frak, No! SyFy Cancels CAPRICA, Pulls Rest Of Season Off Schedule

The Battlestar Galactica prequel series, Caprica, has been canceled by SyFy. The network cites low ratings for the decision. SyFy has also pulled the rest of season 1.5 off the airing schedule beginning next week, but don’t riot yet. Fans can still see the conclusion to season one sometime early next year.

This is what SyFy had to say about the cancelation of Caprica:

“The remaining first run episodes of Caprica – airing Tuesdays at 10/9c – will be removed from the schedule as of next Tuesday, November 2. These final five episodes of the season will be re-scheduled to air at a to be announced time in the first quarter of 2011, and will conclude the run of the series.

We appreciate all the support that fans have shown for Caprica and are very proud of the producers, cast, writers and the rest of the amazing team that has been committed to this fine series,” said Mark Stern, EVP of Original Programming at Syfy. “Unfortunately, despite its obvious quality, Caprica has not been able to build the audience necessary to justify a second season.”

This news comes right on the heels of the announcement of Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome pilot being ordered by SyFy. Blood and Chrome would follow “a young William Adama’s adventures during the first Cylon war.”

[The Shakedown]

I am colossally saddened by this news. Just when I was just getting really wrapped up in the plotlines of Caprica, they take it away! This show wove a rich and relatable history to the intertwined destiny of the human and Cylon races. You can see how the pain of loss and the brilliance of life everlasting could lead to such desperate measures. The ensemble cast, writing, effects, art direction, and costuming of Caprica was one of the best that a SyFy show has ever had. The world the Caprica team created had so much depth and possibilities.

As if cancelation weren’t bad enough, pushing back the rest of season 1.5 to next year seems insulting to fans that supported the show. The way that the show’s freshman season was broken up must have made it too difficult to build a strong audience. Perhaps the momentum just couldn’t build and sustain the show?

On the bright side, we might be able to get more of the BSG prequel mythos with Blood and Chrome. We’ll jump to ten years into the first Cylon war and skip the childhood of William Adama, but it’s still a chance to explore more of the prequel story, right?

I will miss Caprica. I will continue to wear my “Greetings from Caprica City” shirt with pride and leave you with this sentiment: Is it ironic that there are five final episodes of season 1.5 left to air?
