The question of “Will Peter fall for Bolivia (aka Alt-Olivia)?” stands with a double meaning this season. The alternate version of Olivia (Anna Torv) is in our universe as a double agent, under cover as our Agent Olivia Dunham, as well as playing along with the blossoming love affair with Peter Bishop (Joshua Jackson). Tonight’s episode of Fox’s Fringe, entitled “The Box”, will put Bolivia to the test in both capacities.
Torv explained how Bolivia adapts to her undercover life and her relationship with Peter:
“It starts off absolutely as this mission. She’s got her own life and her own lover too, but slowly as they kind of embark on this thing, I think it’s difficult for her. I think [Peter] grows on her a little bit.”
Unfortunately, love always clouds judgment. Jackson said that Peter will have to be “the idiot” this time:
“From an audience standpoint, and certainly from an actor’s standpoint, you go ‘Well, it’s pretty clear,’ and it’s not that much of a leap for him to go, ‘Wait a minute, there is a girl that looks just like this on the other side and this girl is nothing like the girl I used to know. What could possibly have happened?'”
But did we ever consider that Peter may be more compatible with Bolivia than he is with Olivia? Jackson continued:
“The [real] Olivia is more emotionally closed off and sort of just-the-facts, whereas [Bolivia] is sort of off the cuff. That’s closer to Peter’s personality, so there’s a more natural mesh between those two people. She’s not nearly as broken as our Olivia.”
Olivia lost her mother at a young age, but Bolivia grew up with in a loving mother-daughter relationship with her mother still alive. That critical difference shapes an entirely different person. Torv talks about the two Olivias:
“They’re so alike in that they’ve ended up in exactly the same job with the same unit and the same partner and the same boss. They really are, genetically, the same person, and all that’s shifted is their reactions are a little bit different. They’ve led a little bit of a different life.”
The Walternate needs Peter to destroy our universe. Will Bolivia convince Peter to help her? When will he realize that this is not his Olivia?
In tonight’s episode, Bolivia’s mission in our universe is set into motion. Check out the episode synopsis, promo, behind the scenes look, and sneak peek below:
