Zombieland 2: The Undead In 3D

Zombieland was directed by Ruben Fleischer, written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, and starred Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin as survivors of a zombie apocalypse. The film received positive critical reviews and was a commercial success, grossing more than $60.8 million in 17 days, surpassing the Dawn of the Dead remake to become the top-grossing zombie film in history.

Zombieland Co-writer Rhett Reese posted the following message about the film via twitter about one month ago.

“Zombieland currently the most pirated movie on bit torrent. Over one million downloads and counting. Beyond depressing. This greatly affects the likelihood of a Zombieland 2.”

But just last week “Zombieland” director Ruben Fleischer, sat down for an interview and confirmed that he, Sony and the original cast (Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone & Abigail Breslin) are all very interested in a “Zombieland” sequel.

Fleischer says the next film will likely be 3-D,

“the genre really lends itself to [3-D]”, and convinced – via what we’re hearing and seeing of “Avatar” – the technology is now there.”

So when are we likely to see “Zombieland 3D” hit theaters? Hinting that they haven’t decided on the storyline yet. Fleischer says;

“Whenever we crack it”

The next day, Rhett Reese jumped back on twitter and posted the following slew of tweets about Zombieland 2.

To those of you who have asked, Zombieland 2 is still a hypothetical – no more than a glint its parents’ eye.

That said, everyone involved would love to make a Z2, and there have definitely been rumblings.

Just to assuage fears, if the seuqel becomes a reality, it won’t be a rush job, or a cash grab, or a 3D gimmick fest.

The creative team (Ruben, Gavin, ourselves, the actors, the studio, the crew) only wants to revisit Zland if it can be great.

And we’ll do our absolute best not to disappoint. As Jim Harbaugh says, ‘with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind.’

And I’ll see what I can do about learning to spell ‘sequel.’

We first wrote Zombieland as a TV show, so we do have more ideas for these characters. And we’d love to explore!

For the record, we love the idea of 3D, and would write with that in mind. And Ruben would just crush in that format.

But don’t get too antsy, if it happens, it’s likely still a ways off. Thanks so much for your interest!

No word if Bill Murray will return.
