Margaret Atwood (The Handmaid’s Tale) has called her books “speculative fiction,” others have called them fantastic and fantastical, satirical and lovely, while still others find them simply depressing. Let’s see what Darren Aronofsky (Noah) makes of her work, when he adapts her MaddAddam trilogy (Oryx and Crake, The Year of the Flood, and MaddAddam) into a series for HBO.
Deadline first broke the news, and reports that Aronofsky and his team are currently meeting with writers for the project, which will be produced by his company Protozoa Pictures.
Here’s what Atwood’s site says about the three books:
Oryx and Crake – Oryx and Crake is at once an unforgettable love story and a compelling vision of the future that is both all too familiar and beyond our imagining.
The Year of the Flood – A natural disaster has altered the Earth as we know it, obliterating most human life. The story that unfolds is a testament to Margaret Atwood’s visionary power.
MaddAddam – Margaret Atwood’s latest novel brings together two of her previous works, Oryx and Crake and The Year of the Flood in a thrilling conclusion that points towards the ultimate endurance of community, and love.
Set in the mid-21st century, the books are dystopian but feature such interesting beings as Crakers and Giant Pigoons. Thank goodness this is for HBO; there’s every chance this series will be absolutely wonderful.
We’ll keep you posted.
