It hasn’t been a secret that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 would have its main relationship focus be on the blonde Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) and Peter (Andrew Garfield), though three days of filming were done to introduce Mary Jane Watson (Shailene Woodley).
According to an interview between THR and director Marc Webb, those three days worth of shooting have all been cut from the movie.
I made a creative decision to streamline the story and focus on Peter and Gwen and their relationship. Shailene is an incredibly talented actress, and while we only shot a few scenes with Mary Jane, we all love working with her.
While Shailene is understanding about the decision, it’s unclear if she will reprise the role in the future. It will mostly likely come down to her availability as she’s presently tied up in what looks to be the next Hunger Games phenomenon, Divergent.
The role of Mary Jane will most likely be saved for one of the two The Amazing Spider-Man movies that are already in the works according to Deadline for June 10, 2016, and on May 4, 2018, so recasting is totally possible, but it has not already been done with the recent casting of Sarah Gadon. She was added to the cast late last week in an unnamed role, but she took to Twitter to squash any possible rumors of her taking over Mary Jane specifically.
To all those a twitter, I will not be playing MJ in Spider-Man. I have a role in the film, but it is not that one :)
