This has to be amongst the most geektastic news of the month, if not the year. JJ Abrams, mastermind of the Star Trek reboot that is the Star Trek movie (and the upcoming sequel Star Trek Into Darkness), co-creator of Lost and Fringe, Super 8, and so much more, will be directing the next Star Wars movie, currently going by the working title Star Wars: Episode VII.

Deadline apparently broke the story, and while other notable sites have reported that their “sources confirm,” we have not yet heard from Lucasfilm or its new parent Walt Disney Co.

As we told you back in November, Michael Arndt will be penning the script for the movie. Here’s that press release again:

As pre-production of Star Wars: Episode VII begins, Lucasfilm has confirmed that award-winning writer Michael Arndt will write the screenplay for the new Star Wars film. As revealed in the ongoing video series posted here on StarWars.com, Kathleen Kennedy and George Lucas have begun story conferences with Arndt. Arndt won an Academy Award® for Best Original Screenplay for writing Little Miss Sunshine (2006), and was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay for writing Toy Story 3 (2010).

Soooo… the mastermind behind the reboot of Star Trek will now be directing the new era of Star Wars… The mind reels. I am a giant fan of the man’s work (we’ll just ignore that whole Undercovers thing) and I cannot wait to see what he will do with a franchise that he famously adores. And oh dear, all the poor non-nerdy people who keep confusing the two franchises will now have even more trouble…
