Verbinski Says BIOSHOCK Movie Is Still Happening, Has To Be R Rated

Back in August, Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean) stepped out of the directors chair to become the producer and Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) was tapped by Universal Pictures to direct a big screen adaptation of Take-Two Interactive‘s epic video game, BioShock in his place.

The project was then put on hold after Universal had reservations about an R rated video game adaptation with a $160 million budget. Verbinski then turned his attention to his upcoming CG animated film Rango, and Fresnadillo focused on his film, Intruders. Luckily, neither Verbinski or Fresnadillo have forgotten about BioShock and Verbinski recently told IGN that the film is still in the works.

Verbinski said,

“We’re working trying to make it. The problem with BioShock was: R-rated movie, underwater, horror. It’s a really expensive R-rated movie, so we’re trying to figure out a way working with [director] Juan Carlos [Fresnadillo] to get the budget down and still keep so it’s true to the core audience, you know? The thing is it has to be R, a hard R.”

“We don’t want to dumb it down, we don’t want to make it PG-13. We want to keep it really edgy, and it’s a huge bill”
