TV Review: Lost Girl: Season 1, Episode 10 “The Mourning After”

Genre: Fantasy | Procedural | Drama

Air Date/Time: March 19 at 10/9c

Network: Syfy

Director: Paul Fox

Writers: Michelle Lovretta

Summary:

Lost Girl stars supernatural seductress Bo (played by Anna Silk, The Ghost Whisperer), a Succubus (a powerful female entity in folklore) who feeds off sexual energy. Raised by human parents, Bo had no reason to believe she was anything other than the girl next door — until she “drained” her first boyfriend to death.

Bo has since hit the road alone and afraid. She discovers she is one of the Fae, creatures of legend and folklore, who pass as humans while feeding off them in secret, as they have for millennia. She is faced with choosing an allegiance between the Dark or Light Fae clans. Bo decides to take the middle path between humans and the Fae while embarking on a personal mission to unlock the secrets of her origin, protecting humans along the way.

Lost Girl co-stars Kris Holden-Ried as Dyson, a shape-shifting Fae, homicide detective and Bo’s love interest; Ksenia Solo as Kenzi, Bo’s human confidante and street-smart survivor, Zoie Palmer as Lauren, a human doctor who competes for Bo’s heart; Rick Howland as Trick, the mysterious owner and bartender at The Dal Riata tavern, with a secretive past that is yet to be unlocked, and K.C. Collins as Hale, a handsome male “Siren” who is the eternal bachelor, ultimate wingman and Dyson’s partner on the force.

Have you seen this show? If not, I am officially and whole-heartedly telling you to check it out. There is terrific energy, really great chemistry, a solid combination of weekly procedural stories with a series-wide mythology, very cool creatures with equally cool abilities, lots of scariness and gruesomeness, sharp fight scenes, some lovely romance, great sex, and excellent snark. It never gets too silly, nor does it get overly dramatic – though it can be serious – and best of all, it NEVER GETS WHINY. I cannot stand whiny, and my husband is equally if more intolerant of whiny, and he also really likes this show. It’s fun, and it’s engaging. This is not a guilty pleasure; it’s just a pleasure.

This week’s episode is a great one to see, even if you’re a first-time viewer. If you are a newbie, besides reading the synopsis above, it will be helpful for you to know a few additional things. “Fae” is actually a term for all or nearly all magical beings. Bo and Kenzi are roommates and best friends and Kenzi is Bo’s detective sidekick. You should also know that although Bo has met many Fae recently, she hasn’t met any other Succubi and therefore doesn’t know much about being one.

We meet new beings and characters nearly every week, but this episode’s new character is particularly engaging. Played exquisitely by Inga Cadranel, I’m happy to see by the press release that she will be back for two more episodes. The onscreen chemistry between her and Anna Silk is wonderful.

As fun as those two are to watch, no one can beat Ksenia Solo for stealing scenes, because she does, every single time. The writers have given her a voice that she embodies perfectly, delivering the best snark in the most adorable package. I would love this show maybe half as much without her. This is not to belittle the terrific watchability of every single other member of the cast, it’s just that she adds an element of tang that perfects the tastiness of the show. She has a terrific part to play this week that gives her an opportunity to stretch a bit on her own, and it’s a treat to see it.

It’s a fun, Angel meets Grimm meets Nikita meets Being Human but is totally its own creature. Give it a try this week with this great episode.

I give Lost Girl: Season 1, Episode 10 “The Mourning After” Four Out of Five Stars.
