TRON: LEGACY Sequel Moves Forward With New Writer

Walt Disney PicturesTron: Legacy grossed more than $400 million across the globe this past winter and even though it wasn’t seen as a smashing blockbuster hit, there is sufficient interest in the digitized world that a sequel is in the works. Even though the price tag involved in making Legacy was pretty high, the R&D undertaken for Legacy will make the sequel less development-intensive.

Originally, it was thought that Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis, both writers on Legacy (and Lost), were to return to work on this sequel, but the duo are currently occupied with Once Upon A Time, a fairy tale television series they created, airing on ABC this fall.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Disney has tasked David DiGilio (Traveler, Eight Below) to write the next installment in the Tron franchise. DiGilio is also involved with Showtime with a project called Last H.O.P.E. (Last Hospital on Planet Earth), a Mad Max meets M.A.S.H. type post-apocalyptic sci-fi series.

In the meantime, Tron Uprising, an animated spin-off series featuring the voices of Elijah Wood, Lance Henriksen and Bruce Boxleitner, will premiere on Disney XD in the summer 2012.
