The BBC has announced that for the 50th Anniversary season they will air a special episode for Doctor Who that will be in 3D. They did something similar for their 30th Anniversary special in 1993. Couldn’t hurt to add a new dimension to our viewing of a show about adventures in time and space, now can it? Of course not.

This special episode is not to be confused with the 50th Anniversary Special: An Adventure in Space and Time. This will be an episode this season that might be featuring some characters and or Doctors from the past, but that’s just my guess. BBC America quotes Steven Moffat as saying the episode will bring “a whole new dimension of adventure for the Doctor to explore.” That’s all the info that they’re letting out about the episode so far, but we have a few goodies for the new season.

Let’s start with a new trailer then follow with news of an upcoming villain below.

I always thought as a classic Doctor Who fan that it would be great to see some of the villains of the past incarnations get a makeover for today’s show. If you ever look at old pictures of the Cybermen you can see what a journey they’ve taken to get where they are now. Well it seems my wish is to be granted in the form of the Ice Warriors. Executive Producer Caro Skinner had this to say to SFX regarding the Ice Warriors.

“We wanted to bring them back because they’re wonderful!” says Skinner. “In the mix of stories that we were planning for this year it felt as if doing something very bold with a monster that hadn’t been seen for a while would be really cool. Mark is an enormous fan of the Ice Warrior stories and came up with the idea. The sense of a monster of that scale and that size trapped in a really small, contained environment such as a submarine was a really brilliant story to be able to tell. And obviously we’ve had a huge amount of fun going back to the traditional designs and recreating them, bringing the Ice Warriors back to life again.

“They were such a beautiful original design, and are genuinely really scary in terms of what they look like as they’re coming towards you in that armour. Letting a huge Ice Warrior loose at the heart of a classic Hunt For Red October style submarine movie was exactly the kind of story that the Doctor should get mixed up in.”

Here’s a taste of what they looked and sounded like way back then. I can’t even imagine what they will do to modernize the Ice Warriors.
