Showrunners Give Details on October’s ONCE UPON A TIME IN WONDERLAND

Once Upon a Time in Wonderland wide

The reveal of the new Doctor was not the only thing going on with Our Kind of Shows yesterday; Once Upon a Time spinoff Once Upon a Time in Wonderland had its press presentation yesterday via its creators, Once Upon a Time creators/showrunners and Lost writers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz.

They gave a great deal of helpful information about the new show, including the following, via Deadline:

It will have a standalone, 13-episode season, though if it is picked up by the network for a second season, there will be a “second adventure”. Bravo, gentlemen. I wish more shows took this route.

You don’t need to have been watching Once Upon a Time at all to be able to jump into this show.

The John Lithgow-voiced White Rabbit will be a regular character, not just a cameo. Roger Daltrey of The Who will voice the hookah-smoking caterpillar, and they are looking for someone to voice the Cheshire Cat. We can expect other great guest voice-appearances as the season progresses.

Sebastian Stan headshotSebastian Stan, who played the Mad Hatter on Once Upon a Time, and who reprises the role on the pilot for Wonderland, will likely not be returning to the show for any more episodes this season, due to scheduling conflicts (he plays the Winter Soldier in 2014’s Captain America and the Winter Soldier). He will be welcomed with much rejoicing should he ever have time to return in any way. No one else, however, will ever play the part: “We are never going to have a Mad Hatter who is NOT played by Sebastian.”

Then there’s this bit of info, via EW, about one of my most highly anticipated aspects of the new show: Jafar:

Naveen Andrews headshotJafar, who will be played by Naveen Andrews (Sayid in Lost), will not have an obnoxious talking parrot as the character did in the Disney movie Aladdin, though he will have a staff. He’ll get a backstory that explains how he got to be the power-hungry villain he is today, much as the villains in Once Upon a Time have done. The part was written specifically for Andrews. Thank you again, gentlemen; I will overlook the odd placement of Jafar in Wonderland in gratitude for getting Andrews back on our screens. I would consider it an extra favor, however, if you skipped the Lost Easter eggs that were completely out of control on the parent show.

I know you’re chomping on the bit for more visuals of the show, but so far only the pilot has been completed. Here’s another look at the trailer, however; it’s a good one:
