RoboCop Remake Snags Michael Keaton For Its Villain

In June, we told you about House star Hugh Laurie being in final talks to take on the villainous role of Raymond Sellars in MGM/Columbia Pictures’ remake of RoboCop. As of last week, Laurie has “dropped out” of the running for the role and the studio has now announced their new casting decision.

Deadline reports that Michael Keaton (Batman, Beetlejuice) will play Sellars, the CEO of Omni Corp which creates the title character for its own gain. Filming is to start next month for the José Padilha (Elite Squad, Elite Squad 2) directed remake of Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 cult classic.

Padilha talked about Keaton’s casting rounding out the cast:

“Michael is the final addition to the amazing cast we have assembled for this film and it is so great to have the last puzzle piece in place. It is thrilling that everything has come together to bring this innovative new vision of RoboCop to life. We’ve got a great script, a great cast, some killer ED-209’s and I can’t wait to get Alex Murphy back on the streets.”

RoboCop is slated to hit theaters on August 9th, 2013.
