Powers: First Look at Jason Patric as Christian Walker

Powers creator Brian Michael Bendis tweeted a link to this first view of Jason Patric as Det. Christian Walker, the lead character in the Powers pilot. They had been shooting in Chicago since in mid-July, and recently wrapped the location work which is said to figure prominently in the show.

The Chicago Sun-Times also got some illuminating information from executive producer and writer Charles Eglee (the Walking Dead):

“Powers,” says Eglee, “is a mashup of genres — like, if you took ‘Se7en’ and smushed it with ‘The Dark Knight.’ ”

Eglee says the pilot, which will air around June 2012 if the full series is ordered, deconstructs superheroes and the super-crime drama.

“For me it was about creating some interesting characters in a law enforcement context, and it just so happens that the bad guys they’re fighting have abilities that regular people don’t have,” he said. “I just look at our bad guys as metaphors for real-life characters.”

Though the pilot is based on Brian Michael Bendis’ “Powers” comics (winner of three of the comics industry’s Eisner Awards), Eglee says the show won’t be dependent on rendering stories already told in the book. In order to flesh out story lines, for example, the show could spend an entire season on a story arc that comprised as few as six issues of the graphic novel.

As we reported to you last month, the production has added Titus Welliver as Triphammer and Alona Tal as Zora to the cast which includes, besides Jason Patric as Walker, Lucy Punch as Det. Deena Pilgrim, Charles S. Dutton as the police captain and Bailee Madison as a 10-year-old girl who is taken in by one of the detectives. Also cast in the pilot is T-Mobile model Carly Foulkes as Retro Girl, described by Bendis as “the Princess Di of the Powers world.”

Although not exactly official photos, Bendis posted these candids on Google+ earlier this month. Nice!

Looks like he’s almost as excited about this pilot as we are!

Powers, if the series gets a green light from FX, is expected to air next summer.
