More Good News for J.J. Abrams But No Joy for Carlton Cuse as NBC Announces Series Pickups

We told you earlier today that Fox has picked up J.J. Abrams series Almost Human, and now it appears that his good news is continuing. NBC has announced the pickup to series of his project Believe. More about that below. Unfortunately, the news from NBC is mixed, as they have officially nixed Carlton Cuse‘s adaptation of comics-based The Sixth Gun.

While we’re of course pleased that NBC is taking a chance with another sci-fi show, and we’re of course pleased that they’ve picked up Grimm and Revolution for another season, it’s a real disappointment that they weren’t up to the challenge of something more, well, challenging. As a memoriam and tribute, here’s a reminder of what they’re passing up, via comics publisher Oni Press:

During the darkest days of the Civil War, wicked cutthroats came into possession of six pistols of otherworldly power. In time, the Sixth Gun, the most dangerous of the weapons, vanished. When the gun surfaces in the hands of an innocent girl, dark forces reawaken. Vile men thought long dead set their sights on retrieving the gun and killing the girl. Only Drake Sinclair, a gunfighter with a shadowy past, stands in their way.

A supernatural western, how cool would that be? Ah well.

On to the good news. This new J.J. Abrams series is the one he developed in conjunction with Alfonso Cuarón, so any hesitation on the premise is hereby washed away, at least for now. Here’s the first screenshot and a synopsis of Believe, via Deadline:

The powers of a young girl may hold the fate of our world in Believe, from executive producer J.J. Television & Bad Robot Productions. Executive Producer/Writer: Mark Friedman. Executive Producer: Bryan Burk.

No word yet on when Believe will be showing up on our screens, but we’ll keep you posted.
