MAN OF STEEL: Ayelet Zurer Replaces Julia Ormond as Kal-El’s Mother

Back in June, we brought you the news when Julia Ormond (My Week with Marilyn) was in talks to play Kal-El’s Kryptonian mother, Lara. Ormond’s casting was then confirmed in a press release from Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures just a couple of months later.

Now, Deadline reports that Ayelet Zurer (Angels & Demons) has now been set to play Kal-El’s Kryptonian mother, Lara Lor-Van in director Zack Snyder‘s forthcoming Superman reboot, Man of Steel.  Zurer is scheduled to begin filming this week. At press time, there was no reason given for Ormond’s departure (or dismissal) from the role.

In Richard Donner’s original, Superman: The Movie, the role of Lara was portrayed by Susannah York, and the character most recently appeared on The CW television series Smallville, portrayed by Helen Slater, who also portrayed the big-screen version of Superman‘s cousin, Kara Zor-El in 1984′s Supergirl.

Man of Steel stars Henry Cavill as Clark Kent/Superman, Amy Adams as Daily Planet journalist Lois Lane, Laurence Fishburne as The Daily Planet’s editor-in-chief, Perry White, Diane Lane and Kevin Costner as Clark Kent’s adoptive parents, Martha and Jonathan Kent. Michael Shannon as the villainous General Zod, Antje Traue as Zod’s evil partner, Faora, Ayelet Zurer as Lara Lor-Van, Superman’s mother, and Russell Crowe as Superman’s father, Jor-El.

Man of Steel is slated to hit theaters on June 14th, 2013.
