Lucasfilm Develops Animated STAR WARS TV Comedy With ROBOT CHICKEN Team

Lucasfilm Animation is working with an impressive team to develop an animated “Star Wars” television comedy series. The line-up of this team includes daytime Emmy and Gemini Award winner Jennifer Hill (“The Backyardians”)  producing, Todd Grimes (“Back at the Barnyard”) directing, Brendan Hay (“The Daily Show”) writing, and Seth Green and Matthew Senreich, creators and executive producers of “Robot Chicken” involved creatively.

Robot Chicken” has done their own stop-motion animation satire of “Star Wars” (that has met to George Lucas’ approval) so we have somewhat of an idea of where this show may be capable of. In Green’s official statement to this project , he lays out the premise for this new animated comedy:

“The ‘Star Wars’ universe is so dense and rich; it’s crazy to think that there aren’t normal, mundane everyday problems in a world so well-defined. And it’s even crazier to think of what those problems might be, since it’s all set in a galaxy far, far away. What do these characters do when they’re not overthrowing Empires?”

This project will be Lucasfilm’s second animated foray with the first being “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” now in its second season. No official date or network has been announced as of yet for this animated comedy.

This project is not to be confused with a live-action television series that is yet to even have a title. Lucasfilm is still in the script-writing stage of the “Untitled Star Wars Series” that began two years ago. The film is rumored to feature minor characters of the series and be set between episodes “Star Wars III- Revenge of the Sith” and “Star Wars IV- A New Hope”. It is said that this live action show will be “more noir, focusing on the underbelly of bounty hunters and smugglers after the rise of the Empire.” A Lucasfilm rep says:

“They are working with writers on scripts. They won’t set a production date [for Season 1] until the scripts are done.”

Regarding rumors of casting for the show proved untrue. The Lucasfilm rep addresses this as well:

“They met with people in several countries (including Australia) early on but they are not currently casting. They are not going to start casting until the scripts are completed.”
