Joss Whedon (Firefly, Serenity) is reportedly in final negotiations with Marvel Studios to direct the ensemble superhero movie, THE AVENGERS. We reported earlier this month that The Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator was on the short list to direct the film, and it looks as though Whedonites around the globe may have a very, very big movie to look forward to.

The film will feature Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Samuel L. Jackson and presumably Edward Norton, among others. Zak Penn, a veteran of previous Marvel adaptations, including The Incredible Hulk, is writing the script for The Avengers.

The Avengers is slated to hit theaters on May 4th, 2012.
