Game of Thrones RPG Brings Martin’s Drama to Consoles and PCs

Fans of George R.R. Martin‘s Game of Thones series will have a new medium to explore the treacherous nature of Westerosi politics later this spring, in what looks to be a legitimate RPG courtesy of Cyanide Studio! The best part about this project is that its story isn’t simply a re-hashing of the books, but a brand new chapter of Westeros’ bloody history, overseen by GRRM himself! Check out the trailer below as well as the official synopsis.

Many powerful parties come to fight in a game of thrones. Are you ready?

The world of George R. R. Martin’s famous series opens further to reveal a new chapter of the story, written under supervision of the author! Travel familiar locations and meet recognizable characters as you take on the roles of two former soldiers of Robert’s Rebellion who have made choices that led them in different directions. Now, despite divergent goals, they must come together to deal with common enemies, surviving countless battles and foiling the plot that threatens the kingdom.

Game of Thrones, available for Playstation 3, XBox 360, and PC, hits stores on May 15th.

[The Shakedown]

As a rule, I’m not big on media inspired videogames; the fairly obvious reason is that most games inspired by movies and television are embarrassing, slap-dash attempts to squeeze every last nickle out of the franchise possible. They are, usually, poorly conceived and badly executed shells of their source material. There are a few exceptions to the “Movie Videogames Suck” rule, but sadly they are few and far between. My personal distaste has to do with hacking and slashing my way through a story I already know. What’s the point if I’m not going to gasp in shock and curse my screen at cut scenes, no?

Thank God, the Game of Thrones RPG doesn’t do that last one, and that the story was overseen by Martin himself gives me hope that this game could actually be good! You can pre-order Game of Thones here and receive a copy of the limited edition art book Game of Thrones: Visuals from the RPG .
