FRINGE Spoilers: Who Will Not Survive This Season’s Finale? Will Both Universes Still Be Intact?

For Fox’s Fringe, death is usually not straight forward. Case in point, William Bell, as portrayed by Leonard Nimoy – His physical death was not the finale end for him. As we saw in “Os” that aired in mid March, Bell’s soul had been recalled from the depths of the afterlife to possess Olivia’s (Anna Torv) body. Last Friday’s brilliant episode, “Lysergic Acid Diethylamide” saw Walter (John Noble), Peter (Joshua Jackson), and Bell delve into the depths of Olivia’s mind to retrieve her consciousness lest she be lost forever. And once again Fringe does it again with throwing us a curve ball into this seemingly Inception-like episode.

I won’t spoil the ending of that episode in case you haven’t seen it (check out the clips at the end of this piece), but death is never black and white with Fringe. Now, word has come from the executive producers of the show that one of the show’s regulars will not make it past the season finale. Jeff Pinkner reveals only the tiniest of hints:

“Somebody we all love deeply will die (before the end of the season).”

Who will it be? Which universe will this affect?

Charlie (Kirk Acevedo), who was killed by a shape-shifting soldier in our world, is very much alive on the Other Side. Producer J.D. Wyman gives a little bit of context to the death:

“[The death] is going to be effective and it will be self explanatory… Fringe always does things the way you don’t expect… In the last three episodes we’re always trying to finish the season off with opening a brand-new chapter for next season, and put the show in a new context for our viewers. So we can tell you that we’ve tried to achieve that this year as well.”

Pinkner adds the big-picture twist to this character’s demise:

“Hopefully it will be wholly unexpected and also re-contextualize the story of season three in a really cool way, and be fun and entertaining and mind-blowing.”

Who will die? Will it be Peter? The baby Peter and alt-Olivia have? And more importantly, will it destroy one of both of the universes at war? Pinkner dispels this theory:

“It’s not going to end. That’s our plan to go forward. Traveling back and forth between the universes is the language of the series now.”

Wyman explains this decision:

“Our goal was to try and make two shows about one show and have a very compelling mythology on the other side. And hope that our viewers and fans would be as engaged as we are with those people on the other side.”

“We can promise that it’s going to be even more compelling and we’re going to develop those characters even more in next year’s fourth season. And we’re going to see more of our characters through their eyes, and their characters through our eyes. And it’ll definitely dimensionalize further.”

There were rumors flying about on the emergence of a third parallel universe. Pinkner dispels these rumors:

“We’re not introducing a third world. There’s our world, and then there’s the world that Peter was taken from as a baby. … And we still have plenty of story to tell just in those two worlds. And maybe at some point in the future there will be a third world, but not yet.”

Will we get to see the First Ones play into the season finale? Pinkner revealed recently that Sam Weiss (Kevin Corrigan) may not be who he says he is:

“Sam is either telling the truth with ulterior motives, or he’s telling a lie, or he’s just telling the truth.”

Wyman says that there is a connection between Weiss and Nina Sharp (Blair Brown):

“There a secret [involved] in that. It’s very interesting. It’s not what you think. Weiss is … “something that you don’t see coming.”

So, who will we lose at the conclusion of this season? How will the baby play into the grand scheme of things? Wyman teases this bit of intel:

“The baby will be part of it. But how it’s handled, it’s definitely … remember, this is Fringe,” Wyman said with a laugh. “It won’t be normal.”

Fringe returned this past Friday with 3.6 million viewers tuning in. Check out these clips of the last episode with the most delightful twist in bringing Leonard Nimoy back into action:
