20th Century Fox is reportedly in talks with director Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass) to helm the new X-Men film, X-Men: First Class. Vaughn was originally set to direct the 2006 film, X-Men: The Last Stand after director Bryan Singer left the franchise to direct Superman Returns with Brandon Routh. Vaughn dropped out of X-Men 3 in the 11th hour, due in-part to a flawed script and too much studio interference and was replaced by Brett Ratner.
EW says, considering the filmmaker’s history with the X-Men franchise that Vaughn “could very well turn down the First Class offer” and Deadline is now reporting that their sources are saying “Vaughn’s negotiations have been touch and go, and sources close to the director said he’s moved on.. ”
