Exclusive Interview: Adam Baldwin Shows Real Love for His Fans at Sci-Fi Expo

The gracious Adam Baldwin had such a good time with fans on Saturday, he extended his stay to Sunday to be able to spend more time at the Sci-Fi Expo in Dallas, Texas. I managed to snag just a few minutes with Adam to talk about the fan-fave shows, Chuck and Firefly, that he’s been so fortunate to have been involved in. Check out our conversation below:

SFM: With the five season run of such a fan-beloved show as Chuck come to a close, what are your closing thoughts on the show and the evolution of your character, Casey?

Adam Baldwin: Ha, ha. Well, Casey was one of the linchpins of Chuck because he had to maintain the danger of the show. When you’re inside an action comedy, you still need to maintain the reality that people can get hurt or killed at any moment and the writers’ goal was to keep Casey maintaining that dangerous element.

And the later episodes, when they introduced Alex, his daughter, and the relationship that he had with past loves and the mother of Alex and all that stuff, it kinda softened him up a bit, but he’s still a pretty good shot. So I thought that they closed him out pretty well. He arced through that show very nicely.

SFM: Casey was obviously my favorite character in Chuck…

Adam Baldwin: Oh, thank you.

SFM: … and I know a lot of other fans’ favorite character and I don’t think that showing Casey’s soft side harmed him in any way.

Adam Baldwin: Good. Yeah, you gotta portray some humanity.

SFM: Do you have a favorite moment on or off screen that you’d like to share?

Adam Baldwin: On camera, I enjoyed very much the times that Morgan and Casey were sorta vamping together. Teaching Morgan muzzle management and trigger discipline. That sort of thing. Off camera, with Yvonne because she has a bawdy sense of humor that the character didn’t really allow for that kept us in stitches. She is very hilarious.

SFM: Was she a prankster?

Adam Baldwin: Yes, she could be.

SFM: Were you a prankster?

Adam Baldwin: Oh, no, no, no. I’m the straight man. I’m the brunt of these practical jokes and pranks, but try to take it with a good sense of humor.

SFM: Well, now what is next for you?

Adam Baldwin: We don’t know yet. At this point, we don’t know yet.

SFM: Going back to Serenity and Firefly for a minute, what was it like working with a master storyteller like Joss Whedon?

Adam Baldwin: You feel like you’re always in good hands. It’s all on the page and the people that he casts get to play fun things. At least I sure did. I think that the cast of Firefly and Serenity really feel the same way. All of the characters are fully developed and unique. We miss it very much.

SFM: Well, we miss you guys in it as well. Hey, did they let you keep the Jayne hat?

Adam Baldwin: There were two original Jayne hats. I kept one and auctioned it off for charity. And it brought $5,000 for charity which was nice.

SFM: That’s great!

Adam Baldwin: We put it up on e-bay and a bidding war ensued. And the other one was kept by the woman who knitted them both. She worked in the office. So I don’t know where that one went.

SFM: It might be framed somewhere…

Adam Baldwin: Yeah, it might be.

SFM: And is there anything that you’d like to say to either your Chuck or Serenity fans out there?

Adam Baldwin: I just feel blessed that folks have tuned in and were passionate enough to help us get the movie Serenity made. And Chuck was a good five year run that was on the bubble and the fans really stepped up and their letter writing campaign and their enthusiasm helped [NBC] to decide to keep it going for that extra few years. So, gratitude and love.
