thirst watchmen DVD WIDE

The holiday season is upon us and DVDs are the perfect gift for yourself as well as others!  Today’s spotlight is on two films that we have reviewed here on SciFiMafia that are now available on DVD and BluRay Region 1:  the Korean vampire film, “Thirst”, and yet another cut of Zack Snyder’s “Watchmen: Ultimate Cut”.  Take a look at the product overview of these two films on DVD and BluRay:

From the Director of “Old Boy” comes Park Chan-wook’s “Thirst”.  This DVD and BluRay release does not have any special features on it, but it is still one to buy.  If you’re hungry for a new take on a vampire film, this is the one for you!  In essence, “Thirst” is more of a love story than a horror film.  Read SciFiMafia’s review on this unique Korean film here.

Remember, we did warn you that another cut of “Watchmen” would be released for the holiday season and “Watchmen: Ultimate Cut” is it!

What does the “Ultimate Cut” have that the “Director’s Cut” doesn’t? Here’s a quick breakdown of the differences between the two collector’s cuts (“Ultimate Cut” abbreviated as UC and “Director’s Cut” as DC):

Number of Discs: UC BluRay has 4/ DVD 5discs vs. DC’s 2 discs

Film Runtime: UC 215 minutes that includes ‘Tales of the Black Freighter’ vs. DC 186 minutes (theatrical release was 162 minutes)

Audio Commentary:  UC has audio commentary from Zack Snyder & Dave Gibbons.  DC does not have commentary tracks

Special Featurettes: UC has 3 hours of special features, including all the featurettes on the DC and additional featurettes of “Under the Hood” and “Story within a Story: The Books of the Watchmen”.  DC has special featurettes “The Phenomenon: The Comic that Changed Comics”, “Real Superheroes, Real Vigilantes”, “Mechanics: Technologies of a Fantastic World”, “Watchmen: Video Journals”, and My Chemical Romance’s ‘Desolation Row’ music video.

Maximum Movie Mode: Only the DC BluRay has this feature in which director, Zack Snyder takes you behind the scenes and access to short featurettes.  UC BluRay does not have this.

Digital Copy of Theatrical Version:  UC has this disc. DC does not.

“Watchmen” Motion Comics: UC has this on its 4th BluRay and 4th and 5th DVD discs. DC does not.

Basically, the “Ultimate Cut” has Black Freighter footage, 2 more featurettes, digital copy of theatrical release, and motion comics.  The “Director’s Cut” has Maximum Movie Mode featurette footage.  This is how they get you to buy both cuts if you want the COMPLETE Watchmen experience.  Diabolical, I know, but there it is.
