We don’t yet know a lot about the upcoming summer series Extant beyond the fact that it stars Halle Berry, is being produced by Steven Spielberg‘s Amblin Entertainment, will be premiering on July 9 at 9/8c on CBS, and has this synopsis:

Extant is a mystery thriller about a female astronaut trying to reconnect with her family when she returns after a year in outer space. Her experiences lead to events that ultimately will change the course of human history.

It’s the “change the course of human history” part that had us really wondering. Now a couple of TV spots have been released for the series, the newest of which features actual footage, which add some information but really serve to make us ask more questions.

First, the definition:

TV Spot: Extant – What is Extant?

Next, the footage:

TV Spot: Extant – First Look

Hmm. So it starts out as “Extinct” but morphs into “Extant.” But who might be nearing extinction, us or that fetus she brought back with her from space? Hmm…

Extant Joshua Malina

Maybe Josh Malina‘s character will be helping us figure this out. Malina (The West Wing, Sports Night) will be playing Dr. Scott Beck, a cranky head emergency room doctor, according to EOnline.

Of course one of the more interesting medical questions may have to do with how Berry’s character, Molly Woods, could return to Earth pregnant when she was in space for a year.

Extant Pierce Gagnon

Then there’s the equally interesting plot point that her husband has created a robot prototype son for them, played by exceptionally creepy kid from Looper, the excellent young actor Pierce Gagnon.

This gets better and better.

Extant, starring Halle Berry, Camryn Manheim, Josh Malina, and Pierce Gagnon premieres Wednesday, July 9 at 9/8c on CBS.
