BBC America has issued updated information about upcoming series and event programming. We told you earlier today about closing in on the date for the tribute to the beginnings of Doctor Who, An Adventure in Space and Time; now we have some updates on other Our Kind of Shows.
Remember that three-part series from March about returning cured zombies back into society, In The Flesh? It’s been renewed for a second season, with twice the number of episodes:
In The Flesh – Season Two Premieres Spring 2014
BBC AMERICA’s critically acclaimed zombie mini-series, In The Flesh, will return for a six-part second season in Spring 2014. From creator and writer Dominic Mitchell, In The Flesh season two returns to the cauldron of Roarton where the living and the undead have reached a fragile peace. After the shocking events of season one, Kieren (Luke Newberry) is hoping to get on with his second life but the arrival of new and explosive characters throws those plans into disarray. Battle lines are drawn and all will be judged. In The Flesh is a BBC Drama Production, Salford for BBC Three, co-produced with BBC AMERICA.
We also now have a premiere date for new series Atlantis:
Atlantis – Premieres Saturday, November 23
The new 13-part fantasy drama series, created by Howard Overman (Misfits), Julian Murphy (Merlin) and Johnny Capps (Merlin), is set in a time of legendry heroes and mythical creatures. A mysterious place; a world of bull leaping, of snake haired Goddesses and of palaces so vast it was said they were built by giants – this is the lost city of Atlantis. The series is an Urban Myth Films production for BBC Cymru Wales co-produced with BBC AMERICA.
Hang on, what is this “Atlantis” they’re talking about? Ah, I see, they announced it during Comic-Con. LIKE I HAD NOTHING ELSE TO DO. Sorry kids, here are the details about the new series:
BBC AMERICA To Co-Produce New Series Atlantis For Supernatural Saturday
Published: July 22, 2013
New York – July 22, 2013 – BBC AMERICA announced today the channel will co-produce new thrilling fantasy drama Atlantis to premiere as part of Supernatural Saturday in Fall 2013. Atlantis, created by Howard Overman (Misfits), Julian Murphy (Merlin) and Johnny Capps (Merlin), is set in a time of legendry heroes and mythical creatures. The action packed (13 x 60) series brings to life the vast store of Greek myths and legends re-imagined for a new generation. Atlantis is an Urban Myth Films production for BBC Cymru Wales co-produced with BBC AMERICA.
The cast includes Mark Addy (Game of Thrones), Jemima Rooper (One Man, Two Guvnors, Hex), Juliet Stevenson (The Hour), Sarah Parish (Hatfields & McCoys), Robert Emms (War Horse), Aiysha Hart (About Time) and Jack Donnelly (Dancing On The Edge).
The city of Atlantis is a mysterious, ancient place; a world of bull leaping, of snake haired goddesses and of palaces so vast it was said they were built by giants. It’s into this strange, compelling realm that the young Jason arrives and an amazing adventure begins, bringing to life the vast store of Greek myths and legends re-imagined in the series.
Richard De Croce, SVP Programming, BBC AMERICA says: “Atlantis is the perfect series for our long-running successful Supernatural Saturday programming block. An incredible creative team and exciting cast are in place to deliver ambitious adventures this fall.”
Howard Overman, creator, writer and executive producer says: “It is both a privilege and a delight to have the opportunity to take audiences on a journey into the fantastical world of Atlantis. Drawing on the Greek Myths for inspiration, we aim to tell classic, action adventure stories in unexpected and exciting ways – weekly mini-movies that we hope will appeal to young and old alike.”
Julian Murphy, creator and executive producer, comments: “This ambitious new series will see us push production values to the limit as we endeavor to bring the epic world of Atlantis to life. By combining state-of-the-art technology with timeless filmmaking techniques, we want every episode to have the star quality of a Hollywood movie.”
Johnny Capps, creator and executive producer, comments: “When we initially conceived the idea for Atlantis, we knew it would not be possible without the best possible team behind us. From actors to costume, prosthetics to lighting, that team has not disappointed. Indeed we are lucky to have superb talent on both sides of the camera, who have come together to make Atlantis something truly thrilling. ”
Executive producers are Johnny Capps and Julian Murphy and Howard Overman for Urban Myth Films. Executive produced for BBC Cymru Wales by Bethan Jones. The series is currently filming in Wales and Morocco.
Ooo! Mark Addy played Robert Baratheon – the king who sat in the Iron Throne, to whom Cersei was married – in Season 1 of Game of Thrones; Jemima Rooper is Thelma from Hex/Amanda from Lost in Austen! Juliet Stevenson is a familiar face from a number of different shows; Sarah Parish was in Merlin and the UK Mistresses and Pillars of the Earth and more; Robert Emms will be in Kick-Ass 2 as Insect Man; quite the cast! Well then!
We already know that the 50th Anniversary episode of Doctor Who will be airing on the same date as the Atlantis premiere; I’m thinking they’ll likely air Atlantis directly after Doctor Who, and hope that the enormously strong lead-in will work in favor of the new show. Still no word yet, however, as to the air times for each of the shows.
We’ll keep you posted!
