Should we be nervous about one Bad Robot recreating another bad robot? We shall see what mayhem ensues when J. J. Abrams and his Bad Robot Productions join with HBO to create a series pilot based on the 1973 classic film Westworld. It’s a great movie – maybe check it out over the long weekend – and unlike some movie premises, could easily be envisioned as a series.
The HBO pilot will be written and directed by Jonathan Nolan (yes Christopher Nolan’s brother), who will also serve as executive producer. The script will be co-written with Lisa Joy who will also be an executive producer, along with Bad Robot’s J.J. Abrams and Bryan Burk and Jerry Weintraub.
Variety reports that the HBO version of Westworld is described as “a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the future of sin.” See? Easily a series.
The original movie could arguably be considered the basis for the 1970s series Fantasy Island, as the general premise was that Westworld was a kind of resort where people could live out their fantasies, and Yul Brynner played the robot who went wrong and caused, oh let’s just say “some problems.” Watch it, it’s great.
I have high hopes for this one. We’ll keep you posted!
