The nominations for the 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards are out and the sci-fi / fantasy genre had a strong showing with nominations for Christopher Nolan’s Inception, RED, Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, AMC’s The Walking Dead, and NBC’s The Big Bang Theory.
Most visibly, Inception racked up heavy-hitting nominations including Best Motion Picture – Drama, Christopher Nolan for Best Director and Best Screenplay, and Hans Zimmer for Best Original Score for a Motion Picture.
The fantastical Alice in Wonderland came away with three nominations for Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical, Johnny Depp for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Comedy or Musical, and Danny Elfman for Best Original Score for a Motion Picture. Depp is actually up against himself in the category of Best Actor with another nomination for his work in The Tourist.
Alice in Wonderland producer Richard Zanuck was exuberant about Alice’s nominations:
“I’m thrilled for Tim [Burton] and grateful, because the whole picture came out of his brain. I’m here in London, actually, working with Tim on Dark Shadows. Johnny [Depp] is nominated twice [for best performance by an actor in a motion picture, comedy or musical, in Alice in Wonderland and The Tourist]. He’ll have to fight it out with himself, a thing he’s been trying to do for years. He’s winning! We won [2008 Golden Globes] for Sweeney Todd [as best picture, comedy or musical], and Johnny won. But the show wasn’t broadcast because of the strike. So they had to send the globes to us. It was too bad to win but not get to get up to accept it. Hopefully this time we’ll get to. Tim is very pleased for the picture [Alice in Wonderland].”
How did Depp react to his face-off nominations?
“One nomination would of course be a great honor, but two, is simply astonishing. I am floored, truly, by the [Hollywood Foreign Press Association]’s kindness and generosity. I wish to thank them dearly, as well as all those many wonderful souls who made the films in question possible. My deepest gratitude and respect goes out to you all.”
A notable nomination honors the star-studded, comic book adaption Red for Best Motion Picture for a Comedy or Musical. Tangled and Toy Story 3 are in the running for Best Animated Feature Film. Ear candy props for Best Original Song go to Tangled as well as The Chronicles of Narnia: The Dawn Treader.
In the land of television, AMC’s hit freshman drama The Walking Dead and NBC’s The Big Bang Theory made an impression with nominations for zombie domination in Best TV Series – Drama and geek assimilation in Best TV Series – Comedy or Musical. Jim Parsons also scored a nom for Best Actor in a TV Series – Comedy or Musical, which follows up nicely to his Emmy win this year for his role as the eccentric Dr. Sheldon Cooper.
Parsons almost pulled out a “Bazinga!”:
“It’s always too early to say ‘Bazinga!’ no matter what time of day it is. I’m really floored, and we all get to sit at that table together now. I won’t be sitting next to a stranger! We’re in our fourth season, so to have this happen now is all the more exciting because [the show’s success] wasn’t immediate.”
The Big Bang Theory’s fourth season ratings success after the teleportation to Thursday nights seems to positively affected the show’s perception. Parsons continued:
“It’s amazing what those eyeballs really represent. Every time we’ve moved, it’s always worked out. The most important thing [the move to Thursdays] has done is expose eyeballs to it. I think that has to be a part of it.”
Noticeably left out of the nominations for this year’s television Golden Globes are ABC’s Lost and HBO’s True Blood.
The 2011 Golden Globes will be broadcast on Sunday, January 16, 2011 in a live telecast on NBC Television at 5 PM PST and 8 PM EST.
