The Winchester brothers are back! The CW’s Supernatural will be returning in the fall with its sixth and much rumored final season. Things will definitely change for the beastie-hunting brothers after the wrap of the angels-versus-demons-apocalypse storyline.
Season six will bring the show back to its roots. Jared Padalecki is excited about the monster-of-the-week form:
“We’re going to get back to the show that I signed on to, and Jensen signed on to, and we’re really excited to play. We won’t forget everything that’s happened, but now that will be part of the story rather than the whole story.”
At the end of the last season, we see that Dean (Jensen Ackles) has retired and chosen to become a family man. We see Sam return to earth though it is not explained how he got out of hell. It seems that Sam was actually out of hell for a year before contacting Dean! Padelecki explains:
“Sam wanted Dean to live in blissful oblivion. It’s a bit of a strain because Dean feels like he’s been lied to…they have some things to work out.”
So, how is Sam and Dean different now? What is Cass (Misha Collins) up to? Check out the interviews below for more spoilery goodies on Supernatural!

The title of your article could have been for season 4. As I understand Sam was in a cage, not hell. I think your title is wrong ;)
Thanks for your comment, Amy. Yes, it seems very reminiscent of season four, but this time it’s Sam’s who is in the hot seat. Yes, it was a box, but arguably, a box meant to hold Lucifer wouldn’t be all rainbows and fluffy clouds! Though we don’t know how Sam got out, I’d imagine that being trapped with Lucifer would not be a pleasant experience.
UPDATE: According to Jared Padalecki in Comic-Con interviews, the Cage was indeed in Hell. Sera Gamble describes the cage as being located “at the bottom of the lowest depths of the ninth circle of the worst bit of Hell.”
Really ridiculous how they use Deans storyline so totally for Sam. Makes a former fan wonder…..
“We know how we want the series to end,” Gamble says. “Right now, we’re sort of doing something that not many shows have done in the past, which is to say we’ve closed out our first story and we’re moving on to a second chapter. We’re not necessarily approaching it as our last season, but we are prepared for the eventuality. We’ve got an endgame, absolutely.”
Thanks for your comments, Bradley, Sarah, Megan, and Jenn. You all have good points. This sixth season is indeed a much rumored final season of Supernatural. (Post now edited to indicate rumored final season.) As Eric Kripke said at Comic-Con just a few days ago, even though the series was conceived to have a five season run, they are undoubtedly happy with the renewal and will strive to keep the series compelling to stay respectful of their audience. He credits Sera Gamble for keeping the show going in new directions, but inferred that they would not keep plodding on if the show loses that spark.
Um… where did you hear final season? Nothing’s been mentioned about this being the last season of Supernatural. What’s the source on that tidbit?
Actually, season five was the original planned final season. Padelecki & Ackles only have a six year contract and it’s been an oft spoken factoid that there are no plans to go beyond season six. I’m sure if ratings when through the roof and they unloaded money on Sam and Dean, they would sign an extension.
Exec. producers Sera Gamble and Bob Singer have said in multimple interviews that Season six is the end as well.
from what ive seen in interviews at the Comic-Con Sera Gamble has said that they have many ideas if the show continues for aother season. They won’t know if there is a season 7 or not till much later but i havent heard anyone say that another season is a definite no. Eric Kripke’s idea was a five year storyline but they had a plan in case it went to season 6. i’ve also heard that as long as the ratings increase, like they have been, the show will stay on for another season.
