David Tennant Not Coming To American TV Yet

NBC has passed on picking up the pilot for legal drama “Rex Is Not Your Lawyer” which stars now-ex “Doctor Who” actor, David Tennant.  The show is not canceled, but rather “on hold”.  “Rex Is Not Your Lawyer” was originally to slide into the vacated Jay Leno-10pm spot.  The hold could be because NBC wants to premiere the show with its fall line-up.

Rex Is Not Your Lawyer”s impressive cast also included Jerry O’Connell, Jane Curtin, Abigail Spenser, and Jeffrey Tambor.

Word is that the sets for the show are being taken down this week.  While this sounds alarming for the fate of the show, an NBC source insists that the show isn’t gone for good:

“The sets are on fold-and-hold.  They will still be available if the show is picked up for the fall.”

Rex Is Not Your Lawyer” has been in development by NBC for almost two years.  The pilot was in the can last December.

This article really pisses me off. Rex was never slated to be a Spring show but rather a Fall show. It wasn’t until the Leno/Conan thing came about that NBC made mention of considering Rex for a Spring slot.

As for the “set folding”, the reason for that is because Rex was the first of MANY pilots ordered by NBC and since, like you said, it’s already in the can, they need to clear the stages to make all these other pilots. Additionally, they can’t pick up a legal drama/comedy when they don’t have any other legal drama/comedy pilots to compare it to for the season; as I’m sure you are well aware of they have several legal shows green-lighted for pilot development.

If you are someone who really wants Rex to get picked up, I suggest you write less ‘alarming’ articles that just feed the frenzy of “OMG! NBC didn’t pick up Rex!” and focus on the real reasons why Rex didn’t make the Spring schedule.

Rex is one of the strongest shows NBC has coming into Fall based solely on the pilot script and I am confident that even NBC isn’t stupid enough to pass on a show that comes with a built-in fanbase for its lead actor.

    • Shawn says:

What the hell is your problem? She didn’t write anything “alarming” in this article, she even quotes an NBC source who said “The sets are on fold-and-hold. They will still be available if the show is picked up for the fall.” – she even prefaced in her title with the word “yet”, unlike her sources who ‘did’ make it sound alarming and scandalous, she simply reported the facts and the quote.

Due to the fact that “REX” isn’t even a Sci-Fi show, she’s doing Tennant fans a service by posting anything about it in the first place, she should probably just ignore all “REX” related news since the show isn’t Doctor Who and as an added bonus, she wouldn’t have to deal with people like you badmouthing her for simply disseminating information for Tennant fans.

Also, your final comment that “NBC isn’t stupid enough to pass on a show” makes everything you said before it, null and void and proves that you have no idea what you’re talking about.

      • Vanessa says:

I agree. It’s not sci-fi so it really doesn’t belong here. Tennant fans can get accurate news in a gazillion other places.

As for NBC, they make one stupid decision after another so all I was saying was that they’re dumb but they can’t be THAT dumb.

        • Shawn says:

I didn’t say that it didn’t belong here, I said that “she’s doing Tennant fans a service by posting anything about it in the first place” even though “Rex” isn’t a sci-fi show but that she should probably ignore it if she has to deal with attitudes like yours for simply passing on information.

I just don’t understand why you keep insulting her (or the site).. so, you’re saying this Tennant news isn’t “accurate”? You’re shooting the messenger here and that’s a bit inappropriate, she named and linked her sources for the information in her post – So, why would you browbeat her over it? It’s not like it’s her ‘opinion’, it’s information derived from various sources (some of which were within NBC).

Go yell at TVSquad and Entertainment Weekly for being “inaccurate”. I’m sure Michael Ausiello from EW (one of the most respected entertainment journalists of the last decade) would appreciate you telling him that his information is inaccurate – after all, I’m sure he doesn’t know anyone on the inside??

If a correction is made with regards to any of this information by an official from the network or someone from the Production staff for the show, it would surely be posted here as well. So, to call this inaccurate, and having no credentials yourself or any proof is just hearsay on your part, not to mention irresponsible and rude.

        • tardis10 says:

I’m going to have to side with Shawn on this one, especially considering how many news services reported the same (what you called) ‘inaccurate’ news. Just look at google news link-> http://bit.ly/dlxWsZ

I guess the Telegraph, The Sun and The Mirror in the U.K., in addition to the Irish Independent all got it wrong as well because they cited the same sources that she did! You’d better hurry up and tell their journalists how horribly inaccurate and wrong they are!

    • Vanessa, it is unfortunate that this article angered you. While other sources may sensationalize the fact that the sets were coming down, I did point out that “Rex” is up for consideration for the fall, hence the quote from NBC source.

As Shawn and tardis10 have pointed out, this article’s main purpose is to notify the fans of David Tennant of his next project. David Tennant is a notable person in the sci-fi genre. However, we have not provided coverage on the content of the show itself because “Rex” is not a scifi show. I, as a fan of David Tennant, would like to know what he’s up to.

      • Vanessa says:

        Ms. Standefer:

Thank you for your reply; my apologies for having stirred this up. Clearly the tone of my original comment did not come across as intended. Not once did I use an exclamation mark because I wasn’t ‘yelling’ at you and I’m sorry if like some of your readers you mistook the tone and intent behind my comment.

In a nutshell, what I was TRYING to say (but obviously failed miserably in doing so) was that it would have been better for this article to have gone into more detail as to WHY it wasn’t picked up for Spring rather than simply saying it wasn’t – like every other article regarding this that went out once the EW article came out. Maybe that’s all I should’ve posted – “Why didn’t it get picked up for Spring and why are the sets being taken down?”. That would have given you the opportunity to give more detailed information.

        Shawn:

Perhaps the reason I called this ‘inaccurate’ is because I DO have insider information and I feel that citing the EW article is doing ‘the buzz’ around this show more harm than good. And yes, I have had a word with EW.

Also, it’s one thing to take issue with my comments; it’s another thing to attack me personally and refer to me as “having no credentials yourself or any proof”. What I originally posted was clearly a personal, not professional, comment.

        • Shawn says:

Vanessa, it was kind of you to apologize. Since there is no clear information from a verifiable source as to ‘why’ it didn’t get picked up for Spring, there was really no need for her to post that.

If you truly DO have insider information, you would have contacted the site in a professional manner and given them tangible proof of your claims about the article, in addition to the fact that you would’ve known to contact the sources and given them the information and they would have posted a correction first (were your claims legit and verifiable). No one from a network, nor a real insider would blindly jump on to a web site’s comment section and question a journalists information publicly (that’s what a fanboy or fangirl does).

My referring to you as having no credentials was not a personal attack at all. Due to what I’ve stated in the paragraph above, it is my belief that you have neither credentials, nor proof of the claims you’ve made about the article in questioning her reporting. If you had, you would’ve contacted them behind the scenes, stated how you were an insider, and linked to, or given them some tangible proof of your claims for ‘WHY’ Rex wasn’t picked up. If I’m wrong, why don’t you use the contact form on the site and give them all of that information, if legit – I think they would post a correction.

        • Vanessa, thank you for your apology. I think your saying that you were “pissed off” led to the impression of yelling. I can understand how riled you must be from the sensationalization of this subject by other media sources. I, too, would like to have included more concrete information on the reasons why “Rex” was not picked up for the Spring, but sadly such details were unavailable at the time.
If you do have insider information, please feel free to contact SciFi Mafia through our contact page as representatives from networks and studios have done. We’d love to hear from you!
