James Cameron’s Avatar Has A $232 Million Opening Weekend

Avatar has debuted at the top of the US box office with $77 million over the weekend. Fox estimated the film’s domestic haul could hit $77.35 million, which would have been a record opening for December. But the final number came in just shy of the $77.2 million debut of Will Smith’s “I Am Legend,” which retained the December record.

The James Cameron sci-fi adventure shattered all competition despite running almost two-and-a-half hours long. The epic feature also broke ground by grossing $220 million worldwide, making it the best global launch ever for a non-sequel.

[Rant]
Everyone is aware of my position on this film and after reading the box office take and news of the ensuing ‘Record’ launch, I’m baffled that we now seem to be making up ‘records’? The best global launch for a non sequel released in December … Really? This makes it’s box office take impressive? So, why didn’t they just say “Best global launch for a movie with re-hashed story-line and corny dialogue ever released on a Friday during a waxing crescent moon”

Before you shell out your hard earned cash on this over-hyped “film”, make sure you check out Lillian’s review over HERE

Maybe I’m nuts but I’m gonna wait for the DVD/Blu-ray release.

Mike, count yourself as one of the few sane people on planet earth. I almost feel guilty that Lillian here at SciFiMafia endured the film and related costs to see this on behalf of the site (she’s a trooper).

I’ll be awaiting it’s arrival on Netflix, and anyone who pulls that cliche’ “you HAVE TO see it in IMAX 3D, the way it was meant to be seen” crap with me.. all I have to say is – if a movie can’t stand on it’s own without the gimmick of either IMAX or 3D, it’s gotta be crap!

The Dark Knight was an amazing film in a plain theater and I saw it in IMAX as well, which I admit added a certain visual punch but – NOT seeing it in IMAX takes nothing away from it either… and, it’s just as amazing on a 60″ flat panel in the living room, so that excuse doesn’t fly with me.

    • No, you’re not nuts! I just think people should be wary of this one before spending their money on this ticket price! Plus, the audience is very mixed (many non-geeks) on this one.
